Creature runs on a simple premise dressed up in a lot of 1950s B-movie charm: spell F-I-L-M, lock a ball, and go rescue the Girl from the Creature in Multiball. Almost everything else on the playfield — the Slide's rotating awards, the Right Ramp count-up, Move Your Car — exists to either help you spell F-I-L-M faster or pad your score while you work toward it. Get comfortable with the letters first and the rest of the machine falls into place.

Spelling F-I-L-M

Each letter has its own shot, and F-I-L-M has to be completed once for every Multiball you want to start. F comes from spelling K-I-S-S at the Left Saucer — four hits does it, and a well-timed plunge around the Back Orbit can bank several letters at once as a skill shot. I comes from lighting all four Menu Targets, which the unlit Snackbar itself will spot for you early in a game. L comes from rolling through all four P-A-I-D lanes, steered by either flipper, and also nudges your bonus multiplier up a step. M comes from the Slide — it stays lit for this letter until you collect it, making it the easiest of the four to grab reliably.

Letters pay by the order you collect them, not by which letter they are — 2M, 4M, 6M, then 8M for the fourth — with an extra 8M Sequential Film Bonus if you happened to get them in F-I-L-M order. And there's a real bonus for style: finish K-I-S-S for the F letter, then immediately hit the Slide for M, and you'll bank a 4M Double Film Letter Combo on top of everything else. There's no Triple version, so don't go looking for one.

The Slide, The Right Ramp, And Move Your Car

The Slide does more than spell M — every hit after your first cycles through Mega Menu (hit all four Menu Targets in 20 seconds for up to 20M), a random Playground Award (Jet Bumpers at 1M, Intermission Time, or the excellent Unlimited Millions, worth 3M climbing for a full 24 seconds on the Left Ramp), and Big Millions (the Right Ramp climbing for a fast 10 seconds). Unlimited Millions in particular is worth planning around — nine straight Left Ramp shots during a good run can pay well over 100M on its own.

Separately, every Right Ramp shot counts toward three thresholds outside of multiball: Snack Attack at four hits (a countdown collected at the Snackbar), Video Mode at eight (punch a Peeping Tom with the flipper buttons — 17 hits in 15 seconds for a knockout), and Super Scoring at twelve, which lights nearly everything in the game at once for a wild 20-25 seconds. And don't sleep on Move Your Car: five Center Shots start it, then a fast countdown followed by a 15-second window to stack 2x, 3x and 4x follow-up shots for up to 80M total — genuinely one of the best point-for-effort shots on the table.

Multiball

Complete F-I-L-M and lock a ball at either the Left Saucer or the Slide to start it. Three Search targets light — both saucers and the Snackbar — and you have to guess which one is hiding the Girl; it's entirely random which one it turns out to be. Find her for 5M times your Playfield Multiplier, rescue her at the Snackbar for 10M more, then chase the Jackpot there. Somewhere between 10 and 30 Jet Bumper hits lights the Super Jackpot, worth double the base value — and collecting it permanently doubles that base for the rest of the game.

The real trick to a big Multiball is the Whirlpool. Shoot the Left Ramp during multiball and the ball gets diverted onto a long swooping path that dumps it into the Whirlpool, where every revolution spots a letter in CREATURE. Complete the word and your Playfield Multiplier steps up, to a cap of 4x on normal settings — and that multiplier applies to every Jackpot and Super Jackpot you collect afterward. The strongest players trap one ball on a flipper and run the other through the ramp over and over before ever touching a Jackpot shot, since running the multiplier up first turns a 40M Jackpot into something much larger.

Secrets Worth Hunting For

A ball that loops the Back Orbit without ever having been fired from the plunger — the easiest way is a fast Center Shot that carries all the way around — scores a hidden Sneak-In Bonus most players never find. And if you're paying close attention, holding both flippers at exactly the right moment turns up a run of small, genuinely funny secrets: right as the Snackbar's sign flips to "OPEN," right as the attendant hands over a menu award, and right at the "KNOCKOUT" moment of a won Video Mode. None of them are worth much, but they're worth knowing about — this is a game that rewards paying attention to its own jokes almost as much as it rewards good shooting.

How Creature from the Black Lagoon plays

Creature from the Black Lagoon is a monster-movie night at the drive-in, built around spelling F-I-L-M. Finish the word to lock a ball and start the search-and-rescue Multiball, and grind the right-ramp marquee toward the game's big all-lit rounds.

The loop

  1. Chase the four letters of F-I-L-M, each hidden behind its own shot: the K-I-S-S saucer, the Menu Targets that open the Snackbar, the steerable top lanes, and the Slide on the right.
  2. Bank all four to arm a lock at either sinkhole, drop a ball to begin the search, and check the three lit spots until the Girl turns up.
  3. In Multiball, cradle one ball and feed the loose one up the left ramp, which diverts into the Whirlpool; spell CREATURE there to lift your Playfield Multiplier.
  4. Cash the rescue and Jackpot at the Snackbar, then let the jets stack a Super Jackpot that doubles the base for the rest of the night.
  5. Between multiballs, keep feeding the right ramp toward Snack Attack, Video Mode and the everything-on Super Scoring round.

Reading the lights

  • F-I-L-M Letters (letters) — lit: Each letter of F-I-L-M lights as you earn it and stays lit for the whole game rather than the ball, so an unlit letter is simply one you still owe -- and the word must be finished once for every Multiball you mean to play. · then: Take the F at the K-I-S-S saucer, the I by opening the Snackbar, the L across the top lanes and the M off the Slide. Collect them in movie order for a fat sequential bonus, and finishing the word lights a lock at either sinkhole to begin Multiball.
  • P-A-I-D Lanes (lanes) — lit: A lit P-A-I-D rollover above the jets is a letter you have not rolled yet, the set clears only when all four are knocked down, and the ball tends to pop up through the middle pair off a bumper -- so glance at which lane is lit before you commit. · then: Slide the lit lane under the ball and roll through it; completing all four claims the L in F-I-L-M and clicks your bonus multiplier up a step. Once that multiplier maxes out, a finished P-A-I-D just pays a flat award instead. · control: Either flipper button: each button nudges the lit rollovers sideways and the two buttons push them opposite ways, so you can walk the lit lane over to wherever the ball is heading (before the ball rolls back down through the lanes)
  • The Slide (status) — lit: The Slide stays lit while the M of F-I-L-M is still owed, which makes it the surest letter on the board; once M is taken, repeat hits rotate through its award list instead. · then: Grab M first, then keep coming back: the awards cycle Mega Menu, then the random Playground draw, then Big Millions. Playground can hand you Unlimited Millions on the left ramp, and Big Millions turns the right ramp into a fast climbing jackpot.
  • Right Ramp Marquee (ladder) — lit: Every right-ramp shot outside Multiball ticks a running counter, the lit marquee over the ramp names the next couple of rewards, and topping the ladder rolls the count back to the bottom for another lap. · then: Four ramps light Snack Attack at the Snackbar, eight light Video Mode, and twelve light Super Scoring -- a brief window with nearly every feature on at once. Take Super Scoring at the Snackbar, then rush the left ramp for the capped Super Creature Feature before its diverter shuts.
  • Menu Targets & Snackbar (status) — lit: The four Menu Targets light around the central Snackbar and the jets keep rotating which ones are on, so the pattern drifts until you knock all four down and the sinkhole opens. · then: Opening the Snackbar drops the I into F-I-L-M and makes it the hub shot -- it pays Snack Attack and Super Scoring, and during Multiball it is where you search for the Girl, rescue her and cash the Jackpot. Mega Menu relights all four targets at once for a quick sweep.
  • Multiball Search & Whirlpool (mode) — lit: Once F-I-L-M is done and a ball is locked, both sinkholes and the Snackbar light as Search spots with the Girl behind one of them at random, and a lit Whirlpool feed means the left ramp is diverting there instead of taking its usual return. · then: Find and rescue the Girl at the lit spots, then run the left ramp into the Whirlpool again and again to spell CREATURE and step your Playfield Multiplier up. Build that first, because it multiplies the Snackbar Jackpot and the doubled Super Jackpot the jets are lighting -- and each Super you bank doubles the base for good.
  • Center Shot (mode) — lit: The Center Shot is the collect point for two separate things at once -- Move Your Car arms after five center hits, and the Double Feature value you stack on the left ramp waits here to be cashed. · then: Start Move Your Car, beat its countdown, and stack the 2X, 3X and 4X follow-ups inside the timer for its top total. For Double Feature, keep doubling on the left ramp -- other shots between do not reset it -- and collect at the Center before the whole value drops off at once.

Lane change: the flipper buttons move the lit lane. Either flipper button walks the lit P-A-I-D rollover sideways, and the two buttons move it opposite ways, so tap to line the lit lane up with the ball's path before it rolls through. Completing all four letters claims the L in F-I-L-M and steps your bonus multiplier, up to its cap.

Start scoring

  • Ball one — Open with a skill shot: a soft drop nestled into a lit P-A-I-D lane finishes the word right off the plunge, or a full lap around the Back Orbit banks whatever K-I-S-S letters are cycling. Start earning F-I-L-M and feed the right-ramp marquee, and note the outlanes only hand you FOCUS, never a save. — P-A-I-D Skill Shot, K-I-S-S Skill Shot, Spelling F-I-L-M, Count Up To Feature
  • Building — Cash the Slide's rotating awards and the Center Shot combos, drive the marquee up to the all-lit Super Scoring round, and steer the P-A-I-D lanes to push your bonus multiplier while you set up a lock. — Hit The Slide For The M, Move Your Car, Double Feature, Super Scoring, Roll P-A-I-D For The L
  • The big one — Multiball is the ceiling: rescue the Girl, spell CREATURE at the Whirlpool for a fat Playfield Multiplier, and collect a Super Jackpot that permanently doubles the base. Super Scoring's capped Super Creature Feature is the other big swing. — Multiball, Super Creature Feature

Does Creature from the Black Lagoon have an action button?

An early-nineties Bally with a plain control set: shooter rod, two flipper buttons, and whatever you can get away with nudging. Even the video mode is fought with the flipper buttons, throwing left and right punches at the Peeping Tom.
