Safe Cracker is not a three-ball game. It is a timed game with an interactive board game bolted onto it, and your score comes from combining the two. You start with a set amount of time, the clock runs continuously during pinball play, and when it expires you enter sudden death — where the next drain ends the game outright.

Feeding the clock

Almost every switch on the playfield adds a small amount of time or briefly pauses the timer. That is deliberate: the machine is paying you to keep the ball moving rather than to trap and aim. Time remaining shows on the centre playfield timer lights and as a life bar on the display during score sweep.

Sudden death is survivable but narrow: most normal events stop adding time there, so the usual routes are closed. The outlane Extra Time lights still work, and the wheel's Disable Computer award holds the timer and stops a drain from ending the game. Any successful time add pulls you back out of sudden death and normal rules resume.

Breaking into the bank

Shoot the blinking drop target sets to light an entrance, then take the lock shot on the left ramp. The bottom left 3-bank is worth hitting early because it spots targets in the other sets, and after the first ball is locked it starts lighting additional entrances.

There are three ways in and the choice genuinely matters: the Cellar behind the sliding target, the Main Entrance scoop in the centre, and the Roof at the centre top lane. The entrance you use determines how far you must travel on the board to reach the Vault — your path is drawn from that entrance's light, clockwise around the centre circle, to the first unlit gate.

The sliding target is where the game is won

This is a two-part shot most players get wrong: you must drive the target ALL the way back, then drop the ball through the hole behind it. A partial hit does nothing. The awards it hands out are the ones that rewrite the board game in your favour.

The board game

No ball is in play here. You stop a spinning safe knob with the flipper buttons to move, while a guard chases you using a purely random dice roll. He starts after you have moved several spots, from the same entrance you used. If he catches you, the run ends.

Several spots are items you can stockpile, and knowing them changes how you play the pinball half. Keys unlock locked gates and you can hold several. Dog Biscuits defeat the CyberDog, one consumed per landing. The stopwatch adds clock even in sudden death. Money Bags and '$' build your stash, with '$' multiplied by your ATM Cards. Code awards another VAULT letter.

Two spots can backfire. Move Cop Backwards is usually good, but if it moves the guard backwards onto you, you are caught. The '?' box hands you a random item and those items can be bad as well as good. If the continue-or-quit adjustment is enabled, you may stop after any successful spin and bank your stash rather than pushing your luck.

The Vault, and the long game

Completing the board game lands you in the Vault, which awards at least one token plus a large points award. Safe Cracker physically dispenses collectable tokens — twenty of them, including a silver one — which is what makes it the first machine of its kind.

The hidden top end is Token Multiball. Spelling V-A-U-L-T turns your next Vault entry into a multiball instead of an ordinary award, and crucially those letters are held FROM GAME TO GAME. A session on the same machine compounds, which is a rule almost nothing else in pinball has.

The tilt rule

Tilting is punished in two tiers. Tilt with time left and the game continues, but you are dropped straight into sudden death. Tilt while already in sudden death and the game ends with no bonus at all — and since the bonus is only computed at the very end, and every bank entrance has been stepping your multiplier, that is an expensive mistake. Nudge carefully once the clock is gone.
