Space Jam
Sega Pinball, 1996 — shot-by-shot rules and strategy guide.
Open Space Jam in the Pinball Genie app →Space Jam is a single-edition 1996 Sega Pinball machine (Whitestar hardware, ~800 units built) tied to the Michael Jordan / Looney Tunes film. There is no Pro/Premium/LE split — that convention didn't exist until Stern introduced it around 2016 — so this is the complete ruleset for the one production run. Two flippers, no upper/mini flipper, and a fixed center post between the flippers that explicitly blocks death-save recoveries.
Layout
Clockwise from the drain: SPACE standup bank (lower-left) → Left Orbit → Captive Ball → Left Ramp (a narrow, low-percentage jump-shot, not a true loop) → pop bumper cluster (3) with the Super Duper Jackpot standup dead-center at the back → Monstars drop targets (3) below the pops → Wabbit Hole saucer (center) → Jump Shot lock lane (center-right, the single most important shot in the game) → 23 targets and Right Ramp → Right Orbit → JAM standup bank (lower-right) → shooter lane, feeding a mini basketball hoop ("The Basket") used for the skill shot. Four in/outlanes double as the SLAM lane set.
Skill Shot
While the ball sits in the shooter lane, the DMD cycles an award (flipper buttons change selection): 300,000 points, Lite Lock, Wabbit Hole, or Super Pops. Shoot into the basket to bank it; a miss still scores 50,000. Both flippers held = auto-plunge, still credited. Making the basket with 300k/Lite Lock/Super Pops selected, then hitting the left ramp within a few seconds, adds a Super Skill Shot bonus of +10 basket points.
Multiball
Locks are built at the Jump Shot lane. The very first hit of the game lights all three locks simultaneously — a huge head start — so three more Jump Shot hits lock every ball and launch Multiball (four total Jump Shot hits: one to light all locks, three more to lock balls 1, 2, and 3 and start Multiball). Each subsequent multiball raises the requirement: the 2nd needs one dedicated shot per lock, and each one after that adds another shot, capping at five. Once running, Multiball plays out as four escalating jackpot waves that loop: (1) both ramps lit for Double Jackpot, (2) both orbits plus Jump Shot lit for Jackpot, (3) captive ball for Super Jackpot (base 3,000,000), (4) right ramp lights the center Super Duper Jackpot target for a 15-second window (base 5,000,000, re-lightable by re-shooting the ramp). Base jackpot is 500,000, and every switch hit registered along the way adds 1,000 to the eventual payout — the game's core "let it build before you cash" mechanic.
The Seven Planets (wizard qualification)
Seven objectives light lamps toward the wizard mode: SLAM (clear all 4 SLAM lanes once), IN YER FACE (3 captive-ball hits, unlocked by knocking the Monstars drops twice), FIRE (4 right-ramp shots), SPACE JAM (clear both SPACE and JAM banks, which also starts the 45-second Superjam mode), REBOUND (25 pop bumper hits), FAST BREAK (5 shots to each orbit, after which the right ramp becomes an escalating 200k→700k shot), and SUPER JACKPOT (score one during regular Multiball). Lighting all seven and shooting the left ramp starts Final Jam — a 60-second, all-5-balls-in-play wizard mode where every switch hit anywhere adds 10,000 to a running pot and every basket make collects the full accumulated value before it resets and keeps building. This is the sole terminal wizard mode.
Wabbit Hole
Lit by clearing both red "23" standups beside the right ramp. Hitting it shows three of a pool of possible awards and auto-selects one; awards stack and carry across balls until collected. Confirmed pool includes flat points, 1-on-1 and 2-on-2 mini-multiballs, Video Mode, a drop-target Defence hurry-up, Super Pops, and Full Court Frenzy — a rare 5-ball multiball with all six arrow shots lit, an escalating value, and an unusually long ball-save, the single biggest scoring opportunity in the game.
Bonus Multiplier
The only multiplier is Bonus X, advanced by completing all four SLAM lanes (the in/outlanes double-duty as letter lanes). It caps at 6X, and reaching it lights a free Extra Ball at the Jump Shot — good synergy since Jump Shot is already the priority shot all game. End-of-ball bonus is 10,000 per basket/orbit/ramp/Jump Shot switch made that ball, times Bonus X, plus a flat bonus per planet lit.
Basket Points (secondary track)
A separate scoring ladder running alongside normal points: captive ball = 2, left ramp = 3, left ramp during FIRE or as a Super Skill Shot = 10. 23 basket points banks 300,000; 45 points grants a direct Extra Ball.
Strategy in brief
There is no dedicated "combo" system (no combo meter/timer/named combo awards — this predates that design convention), but the game has clear repeatable money sequences: the jackpot wave loop, the Superjam chain, and Fast Break's ramping right-ramp value. The dominant strategy is to spam the Jump Shot almost exclusively pre-multiball (it's the highest-percentage, most important shot and the direct route to locks — four total hits: light all locks, then lock balls 1, 2, and 3 to start Multiball), picking up SLAM/SPACE/JAM/pop-bumper progress only incidentally, then broaden out to the full ramp/orbit/captive-ball jackpot geometry once Multiball is actually running and those shots pay real jackpot value. The left ramp is a low-percentage, hard-to-make shot and should not be chased early. No forgiving ball-save exists beyond the skill shot, and the fixed center post removes the classic death-save recovery, so aggressive nudging and rushed shots (especially under the Super Duper Jackpot's 15-second countdown) are genuine drain risks.
Goals in Space Jam
Every goal below is tracked step-by-step, with shot paths drawn on the playfield map, inside the app.
-
Basket Skill Shot
Cycle the DMD-selected award while the ball sits in the shooter lane, then plunge into the mini basketball hoop to bank it — the safest guaranteed points or progress of the ball.
Reward: Banks the DMD-selected award (300K, Lite Lock, Wabbit Hole, or Super Pops); a miss still scores 50,000 consolation
-
Super Skill Shot Follow-Up
Immediately after banking a basket skill shot with 300k, Lite Lock, or Super Pops selected, follow up with the left ramp for bonus basket points.
Reward: +10 basket points added on top of the banked skill-shot award, if the left ramp lands within the window
-
Full Jackpot Wave Loop
The core money sequence once multiball is running — four escalating jackpot waves that loop, with switch hits along the way inflating each payout.
Reward: Double Jackpot + Jackpot trio + Super Jackpot (3M) + Super Duper Jackpot (5M), then the loop restarts at wave 1
-
Superjam Chain
Light every SPACE and JAM target to trigger Superjam, then chain every jackpot shot plus the captive ball before the 45-second timer runs out.
Reward: 50,000 + 150,000 + 100,000 x3 across the 5 unique jackpot shots, finished within the 45-second timer
-
Fast Break Ramp Rush
Complete both orbits five times each to qualify Fast Break, then hammer the right ramp while its value climbs from 200k to a 700k cap.
Reward: Right ramp value climbs from 200,000 to a 700,000 cap per hit once Fast Break is qualified
-
SPACE JAM Target Combo
The lower-playfield bookend banks — clear SPACE on the left, then JAM on the right, to light Superjam and satisfy one of the Seven Planets.
Reward: Lights Superjam (the 45-second jackpot chain) and satisfies the SPACE JAM planet
-
Wabbit Hole Double Dip
Light the Wabbit Hole by clearing both 23 targets, then dive in for a stacked mystery award — with a shot at drawing Full Court Frenzy, the biggest scoring opportunity in the game.
Reward: A stacked mystery award carried ball-to-ball until collected; chance at Full Court Frenzy or 2 on 2 multiball
-
First Lock Multiball
The fastest route to multiball — the first Jump Shot hit lights all three locks at once, so three more hits lock every ball and launch it.
Reward: Locks all 3 balls and starts Multiball in just 4 total Jump Shot hits
-
Repeat Multiball (Escalating Locks)
Every multiball after the first raises the bar — each lock now needs its own dedicated Jump Shot hit, with the requirement climbing by one shot per replay up to a cap of five.
Reward: Starts another Multiball, with the per-lock shot requirement rising each time up to a 5-shot cap
-
Full Court Frenzy
A Wabbit Hole mystery-award multiball — all six arrow shots light at once, five balls launch, and value climbs fast behind an unusually long ball-save.
Reward: 5-ball multiball with all six arrow shots lit at 200,000 + 100 per switch hit, protected by an extended ball-save
-
2 on 2 Multiball
A smaller two-ball Wabbit Hole award — right ramp or Jump Shot pay 100k and briefly light the left ramp for a bigger 300k grab.
Reward: 2-ball multiball; Jump Shot or right ramp pays 100,000 and lights the left ramp for 300,000 within 10 seconds
-
IN YER FACE
Knock down the Monstars drop targets twice to light the captive ball for a fast three-hit burst.
Reward: 100,000 on the first drop-bank clear, then up to 450,000 (150,000 x3 captive-ball hits) and the IN YER FACE planet
-
FIRE
Four right-ramp shots spell FIRE and temporarily supercharge the basket into a 10-points-per-shot machine.
Reward: Basket worth 10 basket points per shot for 23 seconds; satisfies the FIRE planet
-
REBOUND
A passive grind — 25 total pop bumper hits satisfies the REBOUND planet, no active shot-calling required.
Reward: Satisfies the REBOUND planet after 25 lifetime pop-bumper hits
-
FAST BREAK
Five shots to each orbit qualifies Fast Break, converting the right ramp into a ramping 200k-to-700k moneymaker.
Reward: Satisfies the FAST BREAK planet and turns the right ramp into a 200,000-700,000 escalating shot
-
Bonus X via SLAM Lanes
Roll through all four SLAM lanes to advance the end-of-ball Bonus multiplier, capping at 6X and unlocking a free Extra Ball at Jump Shot.
Reward: +1 Bonus X step (caps at 6X); 6X lights a free Extra Ball at Jump Shot, then 200,000 flat per completion after
-
Super Pops Skill Shot
Cycle the pre-plunge skill shot to Super Pops and bank it to boost pop bumper scoring value for the rest of the ball.
Reward: Raises pop bumper scoring value for the rest of the ball
-
Light the Seven Planets
The full qualification path to Final Jam — light all seven planets, then shoot the left ramp to start the game's sole wizard mode.
Reward: Lights all 7 planets and starts Final Jam, the game's sole wizard mode
-
Final Jam
The 60-second, 5-ball wizard mode — every switch hit builds a running award value, and every basket make collects it.
Reward: Collects the full running pot (+10,000 per switch hit) on every basket make across the 60-second, 5-ball finale
-
Beginner First 30 Seconds
The lowest-risk opener for a new player — bank the skill shot into Lite Lock, then treat Jump Shot as home base until multiball starts.
Reward: Banks a low-risk skill-shot award (Lite Lock feeds Multiball) plus steady Jump Shot progress toward locks
-
Best Opener – Jump Shot Rush
The documented tournament approach — spam Jump Shot exclusively until multiball starts, ignoring the low-percentage left ramp entirely.
Reward: Zero-risk skill-shot award, then the fastest route to Multiball (4 Jump Shot hits), skipping the low-percentage left ramp
-
Multiball Priority Shot Order
Once multiball is live, follow the fixed jackpot wave order and let switch hits inflate value before collecting the two biggest jackpots.
Reward: Double Jackpot + Jackpot + Super Jackpot (3M) + Super Duper Jackpot (5M), inflated by extra switch hits banked first
